How to Adopt a GLAR animal (please read the entire document or we will reject your application)

ARE YOU READY TO ADOPT?

IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO ADOPT?

 

Adopting a pet is a big commitment and one that should not be entered into lightly. Cats and dogs generally live 12-15 years... some longer. Please make sure you are ready to make the commitment for the pet's entire lifetime and make sure it is the right time in your life for a pet. Ask yourself some of the following questions.

HAVE YOU DONE YOUR HOMEWORK?

 

Do you know what type of pet would best suit your lifestyle? Have you read about things like housebreaking, training, litterboxes, and behavioral problems? Are you aware of the daily care of this type of pet? Can you see yourself owning a dog for the next 12-15 years? Most cats & dogs live 12-15 years... are you prepared to make this kind of commitment?

CAN YOU AFFORD A NEW PET?

 

The cost of a pet goes way behind the adoption fee. There are veterinarian bills, food, litter, grooming, etc. Typical vet bills will run several hundred dollars a year for exams, vaccinations, and flea control. If you go on vacation and can't take your pet with you, you will need to consider the cost of boarding or pet-sitting generally around $20-30/day. Additionally, if your new pet gets sick suddenly or needs some emergency care it could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

​ANY MAJOR CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE?

 

Are you in the midst of moving, getting married, going through a divorce, going off to college, getting ready to have a baby or changing jobs? If so, then it probably is not a good time to adopt. Wait until your life is more settled and you have the time to devote to a new family member.

CAN YOU LIVE WITH SOME DAMAGE AT HOME?

 

Can you live with a little damage to furniture and floors until your new pet becomes accustomed to your home? Will you take accidents, even flea infestations, in stride? Even housebroken and litterbox-trained pets can have accidents. Be prepared to clean up a little vomit, pee, or poop... it's part of owning a pet.

DO YOU TRAVEL FREQUENTLY?

 

What will you do with your pet when you travel? Boarding and pet sitting can be very expensive. If you travel extensively, how happy will your pet be alone?

DO YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN?

 

If your children are under the age of 10, experts recommend that you wait a few years to adopt. Puppies and kittens have extra-sharp teeth and claws and strike back when teased. Smaller dogs and kittens may be too delicate for an exuberant toddler; large dogs can knock a child over and adult cats can hiss or bite.

DO YOU HAVE THE TIME TO DEVOTE TO A NEW PET?

 

Do you work long hours? Will you have the time and patience to train the dog or spend it with a cat? Are you prepared to give the pet its needed exercise? Do you have quality time to spend with a new pet?

DO YOU ALREADY HAVE PETS?

 

If you already have animals, have you checked to ensure that adding another animal will not violate your city limits or be in violation of any regulations of where you live? Are you sure your current pets will tolerate a new pet in the home? Have you considered the well-being of your current pets as your first priority?

DO YOU RENT OR LEASE YOUR HOME?

 

Have you checked with your landlord to see if they allow pets? Does your rental or lease agreement specify that pets are allowed? Do you have to make a pet deposit? Have you anticipated what you might do if you have to move? Are you willing to pay more for a place to rent to ensure that you can take your pet with you?

DOES EVERYONE IN YOUR HOME WANT A NEW PET?

 

A cat or dog needs to be a family member and everyone needs to welcome him/her into your home. Be sure everyone agrees not only on getting a pet but on which pet to make part of the family. Let everyone in the family meet your new potential family member before deciding to adopt.

Please be sure you are ready to adopt before making this big decision.

​

The shelters are full of animals that were purchased or adopted by someone who did not think it all the way through and as a result, didn't follow through on their commitment. Adopting a pet on impulse is not the way to go - make sure you can make a lifetime commitment to your new pet.

​

ADOPTION FEES

Our adoption fees are scaled based on the age of the dog adopted. The fees represent the medical care we provide while our dogs are in foster care, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and microchipping. Since we rescue Underdogs, our medical costs tend to be higher, due to the increased levels of care that our dogs need.

Puppies                        $475
1 and older                   $375

Kittens                          $200

1 and older                  $175

***These fees are a baseline and can change based on the dog/cat, breed, medical/surgery history, etc. GLAR has the right to charge a price different than what is listed here.

ADOPTING YOUR NEW FURRY FAMILY MEMBER IS A FOUR-STEP PROCESS

All of our adoptable animals are given a thorough wellness checkup.  Senior cats or dogs may receive additional tests, i.e., bloodwork.  They also receive a fecal, a heartworm test, DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella, and a microchip, and are neutered/spayed.  We may also provide any additional necessary tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, medications, and consults with specialists and medical procedures.  All animals also receive comprehensive dental cleaning and extractions when deemed necessary by our veterinarians. 

 

STEP 1 - APPLICATION


Adopter candidates are required to complete and submit an adoption application that will be reviewed by Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue's Board of Directors. This includes checking references, and checking with the landlord, and veterinarian. If the application is approved for the first step either a board member and/or the foster of the animal you are interested in will call you for a phone interview.

STEP 2 - HOME CHECK
Once the application has been completed, reviewed, and received initial approval, we will schedule a mandatory home check.  Please note, that if you are in a rented home, we will be contacting your landlord for their written approval prior to adoption. If you are part of an HOA we will contact them for approval in writing regarding their breed, weight, and dog allowances.

STEP 3 - MEET AND GREET
If the application is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet with the potential adopters and dog(s). It is required that all members of the adoptive family must be present for the meet and greet. We will maintain social distancing.

STEP 4 - PET INTRODUCTION
If the adopter already has existing pets (dogs or cats), we require all the pets to be properly introduced by a member of Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue. We will not adopt a dog into a home that has reached its city-mandated limit.

 

All required steps must be completed and approved by the Board of Directors prior to finalizing the adoption.

 

ADOPTION PROCESS:

 

Not all dogs listed on this website are currently available for adoption, each dog's bio will contain its availability We are a small non-profit rescue and we are completely run and operated by unpaid volunteers. We will try as much as possible to return all calls, emails, and statuses. All our dogs once cleared for adoption will be seeking permanent loving homes. Before applying to adopt, please understand we are looking for people and/or families who are ready and willing to commit to a dog for its entire lifespan, which could be up to 20 years. Adoptive families must be looking for their companion pet to be a member of the family and not an outdoor dog. Application inquiries within a reasonable amount of time.  However, understand sometimes this is not possible.

 

ADOPTION CRITERIA:

  • Adopters must be at least 25 years of age

  • Please consider the age and size of the dog before applying a dog can live to be in their late teens to 20 years old.

  • Adopters must live in the state of California and within 1.5 hours of where the animal is being fostered.  The city where the animal is being fostered will be noted in the description of the animal.  We have rescued/fosters throughout Californian. 

  • Must have a valid CA Drivers License or ID

  • We cannot/will not guarantee any of our adoptable dogs are "hypoallergenic". No dog is hypoallergenic there are only low-shedding dogs.

  • All current animals in the home must be spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated.

  • Be willing and able to follow the mandatory adoption process and contract

  • We do not adopt or foster dogs or cats to families with children under the age of 10 years old  If you disagree we understand but this is our policy, no we are not the only good rescue with this policy. This policy was thoroughly researched and an attorney and veterinarians were consulted before we wrote this policy. Anybody adopting an animal should do their research regarding the breed, potential size, characteristics, and known behavior of the dog they are adopting. Dogs/cats are not a one-size/breed-fits-all.

  • The animal must be for the person(s) completing the adoption application.

  • Must allow a representative to follow up with the adoptive family post-adoption at 2 weeks and again at 6 months

  • Be willing to provide the adopted dog with premium food (not supermarket food), water, regular medical care (vaccines, flea/heartworm treatment, dental, and any other medically necessary medications, procedures, etc.) for the rest of their natural life

  • Agree to the Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue Adoption Contract

  • Also, agree that Gunter's Legacy Animal Rescue has the RIGHT to regain possession of the adopted dog without notice if any of the terms of the contract have been violated.

Return Policy: We strive to make good adoption matches, and for our clients and our dogs to live happily together always. However, GLAR remains committed to the dogs for the remainder of their lives and will accept dogs back, by appointment, should it not work out. When adopting, we ask clients to be prepared and committed to providing the dog and themselves at least a week together to settle in prior to deciding to return the dog.
